about

Tom's family comes from Vermont. Their linage extends to the Mayflower. All his life he loved the family summer drives from Long Island to Vermont. When the green mountains appeared, he could sense the magic immediately. He wrote, "When you first pass the border of Massachusetts into Vermont, there is a kind of plateau with mountains in the distance. There is a pine forest, taller than the (Long Island) Pine Barrens, and above the scrub there are individual tall treetops. Figures in an alphabet writing out a fierce lonely language... speaking of stillness forever and ever. Of love for the sun, the wind, the seasons. Characters in a shadow play where only the light ad darkness move. The rough faces of Spirits carved in the sky by a swordsman."

lyrics

When you pass the border into Vermont
Beyond the big green welcome sign
There is a plateau with mountains and treetops

Figures writing out
A fierce lonely language

Faces of spirits carved in the sky
By a swordsman
Strokes of a brush left in the air
Against mountains

Unconcerned for the human world
They tell a story
That has nothing to do with time

Figures writing out
A fierce lonely language
Of the sun
The wind
The seasons

Faces of spirits carved in the sky
By a swordsman
Strokes of a brush left in the air
Against mountains

Vermont treetops leave their silhouettes
when I close my eyes
Becoming shadows on a canvas screen
Enact an ancient saga
About the horizon

Faces of spirits carved in the sky
By a swordsman
Strokes of a brush left in the air
Against mountains
